Anna Gonzalez Noguchi, Ellie Pratt & Kenneth Winterschladen

Art Athina, Athens

16 - 19 September 2022

For Art Athina 2022, South Parade presents a selection of paintings and sculptures; drawing together artwork by Anna Gonzalez Noguchi, Ellie Pratt and Kenneth Winterschladen.

Kenneth Winterschladen’s paintings suggest the mapping of memory and the diagrammatical language of textbooks and instruction. His plans and revisions are forged directly on the surface which contain, among others, varying cosmological or personal motifs, synthesizing “detached, out-of-context and dream-like imagery in contrasting positions”. One such repeating personal motif is that of the Great Blue Heron - an icon of the ecosystem of the Chesapeake Bay, where Winterschladen was raised. To coincide with Art Athina, Winterschladen has a solo exhibition at the gallery in London.

Ellie Pratt creates paintings that interrogate the female form and notions of desire - especially those depicted within the pages of fashion magazines. She probes and explores the tension between objectification, directed role, fact and fiction underlining its complexity and perversity. In much of her work, the setting is not immediately apparent whilst also drawing pictorial references from Surrealist and French Impressionist painters.

The slender and gestural depictions of Pratt and Winterschladen respectively are contrasted with the precise sculptures of Anna Gonzalez Noguchi. Combining elements of the handcrafted and the functionality of mass production, Gonzalez Noguchi excavates her Spanish and Japanese heritage in meticulous fashion, recalculating personal spaces that her family have lived and worked. Through this process of relocation and preservation, she questions what it means to posses things and embed memories, personal histories and wider connections.
