Thursday 7 December: night of readings at South Parade

To celebrate the opening of our new exhibition, phosphorescence of my local lore, South Parade is pleased to host an evening of readings at the gallery, with all welcome to attend. Readings will be from artist Esther Gatón and writers Nasim Luczaj, Eva Gerretsen and Lucy Rose Cunningham, who wrote the show’s accompanying text.

Throughout Esther Gatón’s and Carole Ebtinger’s practices, notions of movement and encounter are explored; a sense of attention, time, and intimacy with materials, people and places. Each reading will be informed and shaped by the show, moving with/embodying the material.

September 2023: James Fuller, Cleansing Compositions, 2023. Machined Marseille soap - 52 unique bars, individually numbered and wrapped.

Pulled from the depths of the U.S. patent office database - a vast online object - small acts of incidental poetry emerge, severed from their intended protectionist bubbles and rearranged into one, durational and dissolving text that unfolds through 52 unique bars. (Incidentally, 52 weeks sit in a year - a soap bar a week?)

Each soap is wedded to an individual filing, a temporary communion - a short bond with the crisp edges and tooling marks, the strict language of corporate protectionism now infiltrating consumer settings. What doesn’t melt, often dissolves.
